Preparing for winter - seasonal risk guidance for your commercial and personal lines clients

As we enter winter and the colder weather it brings, we’ve developed useful guidance for you and your clients on managing seasonal risks.

Costly driving mistakes to avoid this winter

Whether driving for work or personal use, our recent press release uncovers some seemingly harmless driving mistakes that could result in a fine or invalidation of cover this winter. Just over one in six drivers (17%) have driven with poor visibility due to sun glare or with snow on the roof of their car. An even more staggering 34% have worn inappropriate clothing or footwear, such as winter coats or snow boots.1

As well as the above driving risks, some costly mistakes can occur before a journey even begins. 14% of drivers have left their car running unattended with the key in the ignition, to de-ice the screen and warm it up and 8% have poured hot water on a windscreen to speed up the de-icing process.1

For your commercial clients

Tailored for your commercial clients, our winter risk management guide is full of useful information to help businesses prepare for the risks associated with the changing seasons. Covering topics from floods to storm damage and adverse weather driving, the guide provides useful information on how your clients can stay ahead of winter-related risks.

Factors such as water, ice and wet leaves increase the risks of slips, trips and falls both inside and outside the workplace in winter. As well as affecting the individuals involved, these injuries can also impact your clients’ business in the form of customer claims, employee absence and bad publicity.

Similarly, understanding the resilience of suppliers and their potential exposures this winter is important to prevent interruptions to your client’s supply chain - not only for business continuity, but also from a reputational standpoint.

For your personal lines clients

Icy conditions, freezing temperatures and heavy snow can all disrupt your clients’ day-to- day routines, and their homes could be sensitive to the sudden drop in temperature. It’s important they keep an eye on their plumbing and heating as the weather starts to change. Keeping heating on at a low level when the property is vacant, turning off outside taps and repairing any dripping taps straight away can help things to keep running smoothly.

Our personal lines-specific winter guidance documents on Broker Create are full of practical information for your clients about how to stay safe and protect their properties during the winter months. With information on how to protect homes from flooding, prepare for storms, driving in hazardous conditions and staying safe and warm when snow and ice make an appearance, we hope the guides prove useful to you and your clients alike this winter.
