Changes to the Employers’ Liability Tracing Office

The insurance industry has previously held responsibility for capturing policy data and the Employee Reference Number (ERN).

The Employers’ Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) has been working alongside HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the FCA to make significant improvements to the process to capture the ERN for the industry. Through a data enrichment process, the ELTO will now work directly with HMRC to obtain ERN numbers. This means that, with immediate effect, we are no longer required to obtain ERNs from you.

If you have the ERN for your clients and wish to provide us this information, we can still do this for you, but we will no longer be proactively requesting the ERN and will not follow up to populate any missing ERNs.

We believe this is a major step forward for the industry, allowing us to focus more of our time in delivering for our customers.
