Phishing scams

When it comes to email scams, it’s crucial that you and your clients remain vigilant because sophisticated phishing emails could land in inboxes, and interacting with them can have consequences for individuals and businesses. Phishing emails can look like they come from real contacts and can be designed to look like the “company” they’re pretending to be. They aim to exploit your trust in the “sender” who is actually a cyber-criminal.

What should you look out for?

  • There’s no real context to the email with generic wording despite it appearing to come from a known contact
  • The email prompts you to click on a link, open an attachment, share sensitive information or make a payment

What should you do if you think it might be a phishing email?

  • If in doubt, don’t click on any links or open/preview any attachments
  • You can get in touch by other means with your contact to ascertain if the email is real

How can you report fraudulent emails?

  • By your usual internal process for your company
  • If the email pretends to be from Aviva, report it to keepingyousafe@aviva.com or tell us via our Fraud Hub
  • Report it to report@phishing.gov.uk by forwarding the email or a screenshot of it. This service is provided by the National Cyber Security Centre, the UK government organisation that has the power to investigate and take down scam email addresses and websites
  • Mark the email as junk and then delete it
  • If you think you've clicked on or responded to a fraudulent email, please follow the advice on the National Cyber Security Centre
