Gen Z - Trends for the workforce of the future
Jason Ellis, Group Protection Sales Director for Aviva, shares insights into Gen Z and the trends advisers and employers may see in the workforce of the future.

Introduction
Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is rapidly becoming a significant part of the workforce. As they navigate their careers, it’s crucial to understand the unique health challenges they may face and the support systems available to them as the workforce of the future.
Aviva research shows Gen Z demonstrates a proactive and positive attitude towards health and wellness, with a strong emphasis on mental health. They are optimistic about achieving future milestones and are motivated to ensure a secure future for themselves and their loved ones. Among their top values, 54% prioritise taking care of their mental health, 52% focus on physical health and wellness, and another 52% value spending quality social time with loved ones [1]. This well-rounded approach to self-care highlights their balanced perspective on health. We’ll explore how the top three claims trends may affect Gen Z in the future.
Cancer:
The Aviva Claims and Wellbeing report 2024 [2] identified that 24% of new group income protection claims were attributed to cancer diagnoses. As medical advancements improve cancer survival rates, it is likely that Gen Z will be a generation that will need and expect comprehensive support during and post-cancer treatment as they return to work. Group income protection can offer financial stability during this challenging time, ensuring employees can focus on their recovery without the added stress of financial insecurity. Aviva also partners with Macmillan Cancer Support to offer expert guidance and resources, helping employees manage the physical, emotional, and financial impacts of cancer. Additionally, Aviva DigiCare+ Workplace provides quick access to mental health consultations, which can be crucial for those coping with a cancer diagnosis and life after a cancer diagnosis.
Musculoskeletal Issues:
Musculoskeletal problems, often resulting from prolonged use of technology and sedentary lifestyles, account for 16% of new group income protection claims. These issues can significantly impact an individual’s ability to work, leading to long-term absences. To support Gen Z and other generations, employers can promote healthier workplaces by implementing ergonomic assessments and encouraging regular physical activity to prevent such conditions. Group income protection covers rehabilitation and treatment costs, helping employees recover and return to work more swiftly. Aviva offers an annual health MOT to detect potential health concerns early and provides discounted gym memberships to encourage a more active lifestyle.
Mental Health:
Mental health conditions are increasingly prevalent among Gen Z, but they are positive and proactive about their health. 19% of new group income protection claims are related to mental illness. The pressures of modern life, combined with the stigma surrounding mental health, make it essential to provide robust support systems. Aviva DigiCare+ Workplace offers 30-minute mental health consultations via an app. This can help ensure employees have access to professional help when needed. In 2023, 10,743 mental health consultations were booked, with 100% availability within 48 hours. Additionally, the Group Income Protection Employee Assistance Programme provides a 24/7 counselling service, with 30,423 contacts made for counselling in 2023. The Thrive app, part of Aviva’s wellbeing services, offers tools for self-managing mental wellbeing, including cognitive behavioural therapy and relaxation techniques. The Aviva DigiCare+ Workplace app and services are non-contractual benefits Aviva can change or withdraw at any time. Terms and residency restrictions apply.
Supporting Gen Z in the workplace
Aviva Group Income Protection and associated wellbeing services provide financial support and rehabilitation services to employees unable to work due to illness or injury. This cover can include up to 80% of an employee’s salary, offering financial stability while they focus on recovery.
Aviva’s early intervention and rehabilitation services are designed to support employees before they need to take time off work. In 2023, 83% of employees who received rehabilitation support from Aviva remained at or returned to work.
Conclusion
Addressing the health challenges faced by Gen Z is crucial for fostering a productive and resilient workforce. Group Income Protection and wellbeing services like Aviva DigiCare+ Workplace play a vital role in providing the necessary support for employees dealing with cancer, musculoskeletal issues, and mental health conditions. By offering financial stability, access to professional health services, and comprehensive rehabilitation support, employers can ensure their workforce remains healthy and engaged, ultimately benefiting both the employees and the organisation.
