The life-changing power of income protection: Mick's journey

Income protection is a crucial part of financial planning. The reality is that expenses don’t stop when income does.

But with our income protection, we offer a safety net that goes beyond just financial support.

Meet Mick

Mick’s journey highlights how our income protection can offer invaluable help during challenging times, including rehabilitation and mental health support. If it’s the best thing for your clients, we can help speed up their recovery through our rehabilitation support services. Mick led an active life as a commercial manager with a passion for football. However, things took an unexpected turn at the age of 50 after a go-karting incident led to excruciating back pain. This marked the beginning of a series of health issues as he spiraled down both physically and mentally. Eventually, this led to him no longer being able to work.

After turning to his pension adviser, who reminded him of his income protection policy, Mick made a claim.

The policy provided a financial lifeline for Mick and his family, but the real value extended far beyond the payout. We gave Mick rehabilitation support through our partner, Working To Wellbeing, with physiotherapy to manage his pain and cognitive behavioral therapy to help with his mental health.

This dual approach helped Mick both physically and mentally. It gave him the strength and tools he needed to overcome his health challenges. He was even able to return to work part-time with his income protection policy continuing to support him by topping up his income. Mick described his policy as lifesaving and said that looking back, it was the best thing he has ever done.

We’re here to help

Last year, we helped 88% of income protection customers receiving early intervention support return to or remain at work*. Going beyond the numbers to support the people we protect is at the heart of what we do at Aviva, tailoring support to suit individual need.

Mick’s story highlights why it’s important to tell your clients about the benefits of income protection. It’s not

just about replacing lost income- it’s also about helping them recover and keep their quality of life.

Rehabilitation and Early Intervention Support Services are non-contractual benefits that Aviva can change or withdraw at any time.
